We hear that our retail store located in Canal Park, Duluth, MN is one of the most unique shopping experiences and locations many have come across. We are grateful and humbled for these responses. To allow us to continue growing and creating a better shopping atmosphere for our customers, we need a leader who brings consistency and reliability. That person is our Retail Store Manager, Molly. She focuses on leading our retail staff to promote and sell our brand and the ones we carry, hit daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly goals, possess a open and comfortable place to work, and make sure all of our customers leave our location with the best experience we can provide.
Here’s a look what it is like desk side with Molly and what gets not only to carpe diem, but ready to get the sales staff team ready to achieve.
Start your morning:
Every morning I start with a walk through the woods with my two dogs, Jack and Reko. Taking a hike in the morning with the cheerful pups brings joy to every day, this is my “coffee” fix, as I am not a coffee drinker.
I always look for the next challenge, next adventure, next item to tackle. You can’t stay in the moment. If I have something to look towards, I will do my best to not only hit, but exceed that goal. One thing about me is I always need an adventure planned, as I live for traveling. It can be something as simple as weekend adventure in our own area, or something across the world, it doesn’t matter. But having adventures always keeps me motivated and pushing to the next thing, everywhere in life.
Research – Reading, photographs, adventures, videos, you name it. I love to look for new ideas, new limits, hear other people’s stories. If I’m watching a movie, I’m immediately drawn to ones that are based on a true story, ones that showcase someone’s life journey and the hurdles they overcame. If it’s something like merchandising or even a house project, I Pinterest, a lot… I’m always searching for new ideas, inspiration for new projects or merchandising ideas. The creative minds of the world inspire me to continue trying new things.
I’m someone that always wants to do better and always wants to improve. Once I hit a goal, I think of what can I do next. I reflect to discover learns and how to improve. It’s taking the time to reflect, plan, and push yourself for the next step. It’s never getting stagnant.
A lot of this depends on the person. Everyone is motivated differently and as a manager, it’s important to take the time, get to know everyone individually, and discover what motivates them. It’s building a family, knowing that everyone is a team. If one person isn’t motivated, it impacts everyone. So discovering what makes that person tick. What keeps that person moving forward. It can be something simple like a “How was your day? Here’s a recap of what you missed” or it could be someone that needs to see big picture and have an overview of how their responsibilities impacts the others.
Find personal balance:
I have to have “me time”. If I am completely scheduled for more than a few days, it will take a toll on me. I need time to reflect, relax, stop, and enjoy the moment. Life passes quickly, so we have to enjoy the now as well as push ourselves for the future. If I get too busy of a schedule, I start saying “No, I can’t this week, but what about next?” I have learned this about myself and now am able to postpone a social interaction so I can have my “me time” to reflect and simply enjoy life.
This all varies. I am usually a very organized person. But sometimes when it gets busy at work, I add it to a pile on the edge of my desk and then tackle little by little with any breaks in the day or week. It is considered my “interim” pile, where if I don’t have time to fully file, add to a digital list, etc it stays in my to-do pile and I tackle and put everything in its place as time allows.
End your day:
I end my day the same way I start it. A hike through the woods, except this time, my husband is able to join. We then relax and recap our days. We are very lucky to live in a rural neighborhood and are able to walk our dogs leash free through the woods.
So next time you walk through the Duluth Pack retail store, know Molly is the head coordinator and manager of the facility. Her expertise, experience, and personality make for not only a great leader, but a fantastic manager, and wonderful co-worker to have.
