The 4 Elements of Duluth Pack

June 13, 2016
IMG_0005-e1461240638628

We hear it constantly and know it. Many companies try to replicate our products. I mean, it’s not that difficult. We’re canvas and leather products. However, the one thing they cannot copy as hard as they may try is our passion, our story, and our heritage. Including the fact that Duluth Pack is the oldest canvas and leather bag and pack maker in the USA.

The Duluth Pack brand itself, revolves around four easy, simple, and to the point causes. Let’s break it down and why each is so important to the existence and reputation of the Duluth Pack company and brand as whole.

1) Duluth Pack stands for QUALITY . As John Ruskin once stated, “Quality is never an accident. It is always the result of intelligent effort.” (This quote was found on Brainyquote.com) We absolutely agree with this statement by Mr. Ruskin. For a 134 continuous years, Duluth Pack has seemed out the most quality designs, techniques, theories, products, and time tested ways to ensure the quality and longevity of a Duluth Pack product remains the same from day one.

2) The second point Duluth Pack involves itself in is PREMIUM PRODUCTS . As the oldest canvas and leather bag and pack making company in the USA, we seek out the highest and most pristine products, materials, and workers to ensure the best product for you, our customers! We want to make sure our durability, lifetime guarantee, and the trust in our goods stays constantly the same. Whether it’s an heirloom passed down each generation, a splurge after good grades, or a daily necessity you carry to work. We want our customers to know we not only research, but seek the most premium items to help manufacture our packs, totes, hunting gear and purses. These include, the type of canvas, the leather used, rivets, the wools, and even the needles we use in or sewing machines. On a last note, Duluth Pack sources as much American Made goods to help create our goods as possible, too!

3) The third on the list is where we are geographically proud to be located. This point is all about MADE IN AMERICA . Duluth Pack has ALWAYS AND ONLY made our products here in Duluth, Minnesota, USA for the continuous 134 years in business! We are proud of where we come from and proud of where we are. We have been in the same factory for 104 years. Duluth Pack is the all American brand that has stayed simple, not flashy, to the point, and trustworthy. We’re a humble brand, that isn’t trendy, but we are consistent. You can even say we are predictable and we aren’t ashamed. We’re proud you can count on an American Made product, basically right in your backyard, and we stick with designs that will take you from canoe to car and from train to plane. We’ve got your back.

4) The last but not least point, is that Duluth Pack has always featured and included a LIFETIME GUARANTEE . The Duluth Pack lifetime guarantee covers our craftsmanship and our hardware. What does that entail? Let’s break it down. Craftsmanship – This includes our sewing seams. If a sewing seam breaks loose and unravels, no worries. That’s covered under our lifetime guarantee. Hardware – This involved our zippers, rivets, and buckles. If any of these break or just don’t work anymore, again this falls under the lifetime guarantee. It’s so difficult to find these days and to know you can count on that with Duluth Pack since the beginning, we think it’s seriously special.

So, when you think of Duluth Pack, remember these four solid, easy, and to the point topics. Quality, Premium Products, Made in America, and Lifetime Guarantee. To know Duluth Pack has remained the same and not conformed to what society or trends entail is what keeps us doing what we know best, making the top rated packs, totes, purses, hunting gear, and canoe bags you can find.

10 REASONS WE LOVE WHERE WE WORK

March 7, 2016
Adrian T.'s submission

Each and every day we truthfully love what we do. Sure, somedays like a Monday can be hard to get out of your warm bed and drive to work (especially in a winter storm) . But, once we arrive and are surrounded by the constant energy, we’re so happy where we are able to call our career. Every employee of Duluth Pack has a different story to tell and that’s what not only keeps it fun, but different day in and day out. So it made sense for us to do a round up of 10 reasons we love where we work.

1) Location.

As human beings, we hear the phrase, “Location. location. location.” That’s exactly what we are focusing on in point number one of why we love where we work. Out of anywhere our headquarters could be located, Duluth, MN is exactly where we want to be. For 134 continuous years in business and existence, Duluth Pack has called Duluth, MN home. We are so proud of where we are, that we not only put the location in our name, but on our logo we also states the geographical area too. We love this area and you bet your bottom dollars we have another 134 + continuous years here.

2) Title.

Duluth is the oldest canvas and leather bag and pack maker in the USA. This title that we hold is not only something we are proud of, but one that we are extremely humbled by. The fact Duluth Pack has been continuously around since 1882 is something that makes us rub our eyes real hard and recognize that it is pretty great to be the one, the only, and the original.

3) Ethics.

Being with a company that focuses on not only the needs of the business, but it’s employees is absolutely ideal. That is what we have all found with the Duluth Pack company. Even with the growth, the Duluth Pack employees meet weekly to discuss concepts, ideas, plans, and situations that we can improve, grow, or develop from. This is incredible, because everyone from all aspects of the brand – production, marketing, shipping, customer service, retail, outside sales, etc – can speak up and describe what they are seeing or hearing. This puts everyone at an even playing field and that everyone is heard regardless of what their business card says their position is.

4) People.

Duluth Pack is always so great as sharing how close we are with our customers. Something many people don’t see or always hear about is how close the Duluth Pack employees are. Actually, we call ourselves one big family. Whether we are taking lunch breaks together, enjoying coffee, having after work get togethers, or just sitting down and bonding over something personal, we consider ourselves one big team.

5) Customers.

Our customers are the most loyal, the most supportive, and the most adventurous people we know. We are so grateful for every customer who has ever purchased a sticker to someone who has invested in one of our duffle bags. Our customers we consider friends and are second to none. Every single individual who purchased something from Duluth Pack allows us to keep doing what we love every single day and that’s helping you all invest in the best Made in America canvas and leather products on the market.

6) Products.

We may sounds bias or brief in a way, but our story is as simple and powerful and that goes for our products as well. Each product we may is not to life a fragile life. Our products want to explore, travel and adventure with you and that means we need to handcraft the most durable, but stylish packs and bags we can. Every single Duluth Pack handcrafted item comes with a lifetime guarantee on all craftsmanship and hardware. In simple text, that’s our rivets, buckles, zippers, and sewing seams. If you want to read more on our Lifetime Guarantee please click HERE . Lastly, every single Duluth Pack handcrafted item not only comes with a lifetime guarantee, but is signed by the craftsperson who created it just for you. Don’t know where to find their name? Look for the Duluth Pack and Made in America tag inside your Duluth Pack item. Flip over the Duluth Pack tag and it will reveal the craftsperson’s signature. If you’re in the Duluth area, please stop by our factory for a free tour to meet them. If not, click HERE to read their fun bios!

7) Discounts.

Obviously you want to be passionate of the products and brand you work for, but it’s even better when your work gives you a nice and generous discount to enjoy as well. We won’t be sharing an percentages, but let’s say that we are treated very well. Not only do we get to enjoy discounts on the Duluth Pack handcrafted products, but also on all the items sold in our retail store in Canal Park from other brands we carry, like The North Face, Patagonia, and Darn Tough socks, too!

8) Growth.

Finding not only a job, but a career with a company that is growing can be rare. Not only is Duluth Pack growing each day, but knowing that there is potential to grow not only in our positions, but within our departments is crucial. It’s a relief to know that the company you love to work for loves what you do and wants to work with your wants and needs as well.

9) Collaborations.

Collaborations and partnerships between bloggers, influencers, celebrities, venues, and other brands not only is hard work, but it’s an absolute hoot for all involved. With months or even up to a year in advance, Duluth Pack’s PR and Marketing teams are working day in and day out of who we can collaborate with to handcraft new collections that leave you all drooling and wanting more. Can you guess what are next projects are? P.s. we just launched The Times Collection last Thursday with Faribault Woolen Mills wool. Check it out HERE .

10) American.

Duluth Pack is an American company proudly employing Americans. Not only do we handcraft our American made products in Duluth, MN, but we also have our own Distribution Center (shipping center), our own in-house customer service team, our own marketing team, and an entire 8,500 square foot retail store that employs not only Americans, but Minnesotans. Also, Duluth Pack sources materials, like our leather in the states as well. Our leathers are from the Dakotas and Nebraska and then are tanned in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Again, more Americans helping other Americans. It’s always full circle for us.

We hope you enjoyed the inside scoop on what it’s like to work at Duluth Pack. We can’t wait for all the future adventures with you all and greatly appreciate your loyalty and support. Want to be a part of the Duluth Pack team? Apply HERE .

MY DULUTH PACK SAVED MY LIFE

August 31, 2015

IMG_0057

They are the most humbling of stories when we hear that Duluth Pack products have impacted people’s lives for the better. Whether that be helping through portages, assisting by carrying books to class or we actually save someone’s life. Today’s post is based on an email that our team recently received this past month from one of our customers. It made our jaw’s drop and gave us gigantic goosebumps. Get ready for a story of a lifetime!

Please note: The customer has given Duluth Pack the approval to share her story with her Duluth Pack along with the photos to prove her point.

Hello Duluth Pack – I am sure like most reviews and comments in emails you receive, there may be more negative than positive comments. However, if you give me a few moments I would like to tell you a story.

My name is Megan Thun I am 25 years old and I was born and raised in Silver Bay, MN just North of Duluth. For years I have wanted a Duluth Pack and never had the funds to buy one after all the college tuition and rent bills. I envied those who had them, and assured myself that I would spoil myself one day with a forest green Duluth Pack. Another year passed and it just was not a necessity, just a luxury.

So last fall I put Duluth Pack on my Christmas list (That my aunt requires me to do). I don’t like asking for gifts, so Christmas lists are low on priority shelf. However, I thought to myself “Why not?”.

Then Christmas came around. I opened a box from my aunt, and low and behold, a forest green Duluth Pack sat in the folds of wrapping paper. I fell in love immediately! It was perfect, it smelled great, and felt comfortable on my shoulder. I cleaned my stuff out of my old bag that night and switched my essentials over to the pack.

Now, when I get into a vehicle to drive I don’t take my purse or bag off. It has something to do with comfort and snugness in the driver’s seat. All my relatives think it is weird. Which leads me to the rest of the story.

On January 7th 2015, I drove my sisters dog to the vetrinarian in Ely, MN. It had snowed early in the morning and the woods were beautiful, but the roads were a tad slippery. So I took my time up to Ely. I dropped my sisters dog off and headed back to Silver Bay slow but sure. I was thinking of going snowshoeing when I got back, but it was rather cold that day (a balmy -20 degrees). I was about half way in between Silver Bay and Ely on Hwy 1, when my back wheels hit a patch of black ice. I took my foot off the brake and let the car slow down and drive out of the slippery patch. But nothing helped. My car was fish tailing around the corner. When I looked up my heart sank… A logging truck was coming around the corner and my car was slipping right into its path.

I turned the car enough to miss the front of the logging truck, but it was not enough. When I realized I was not going to miss the trailer of the logging truck I let go of the steering wheel and closed my eyes. I figured, that was it. In those split seconds I remember thinking “Nobody lives through these accidents.” (please don’t stop reading).

I opened my eyes and relized I had made it out of the accident with my life. My car was in pieces on the highway and I had no windsheild. Miraculously I had no cuts or scrapes. My driver’s side door looked like a crumpled piece of paper. Luckily, my arm was tucked between me and my Duluth Pack. It was a buffer between the tangled metal mess just inches away from me. It saved my arm from injury or worse possibilities. I thank God that I had it with me that day and did not take a wallet instead. I sat in the freezing cold for and hour and twenty minutes, waiting to be cut out of the car that held me prisoner.

When the EMT’s finally cut the car apart and freed me and EMT told me to sit very still (standard medical percautions; in case of brain or spinal injury). I remember him saying “We’re going to take your purse and put it in the Sherriff’s vehicle. (He grabbed the Duluth Pack and pulled). I informed him that it was attached to me over the shoulders. He then yelled to one of the other EMT’s that were there, “Someone get me the cutting shears!”

They say in times of stress you forget your reactions or how you handle situations. This time was one of them. I cannot recall if I said this next sentence with poise or out of straight irritaion. I said, “No! You can pull it over my head and slide it off, but don’t you cut it!” (the poor EMT got the brunt of my reaction, and I am sure he thought I was crazy. I was possibly injured, trapped in a car, and freezing, and still barking orders.) The EMT oblidged and took the Duluth Pack over my head. I cannot recall whether I said thank you, because soon after that they pulled me out of the seat and put me in the ambulance, everything after that gets fuzzy and blurry.

When I got to the hospital I was told I had a dislocated hip. They popped it back in and then I had to have hip surgery to repair the damage. I am just about back to normal now and have little to no pain.

The scratches on my Duluth pack are a constant reminder that I was very close to more serious injuries, not ruling out fatal injuries.

So in conclusion I would like to personally thank you for making such strong reliable bags. They are more than just carriers for us. They are what hold our essentials that makes our lives go around, and they hold memories and emotions that are not visible or tangible in this world. For me my Duluth Pack was a life saver.

Have a great rest of the summer! I am sure the tourists keep you busy! I attached pictures so you have something to pair to the long story I just told you.

Sincerely,

Megan H. Thun

If you have a story with your Duluth Pack, please email our team at: [email protected] and we would love to hear how Duluth Pack has been integrated into your life.

Thank you for your loyalty and support! Please know, our lifetime guarantee can mean more than just the craftsmanship and hardware in our products, as Megan so thoroughly describes. If you’re interested, buy Megan’s style of bag HERE.
